Shopian/Srinagar: Two militants were killed in an encounter with government forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district while a soldier was slain along the Line of Control in northern Kupwara district on Saturday, officials said.

They said a gunfight broke out between militants and government forces in Bonbazaar Shopian at predawn hours.

The gunfight ensued after militants, hiding in the area, opened fire on the Army’s 23 Para and police’s SOG as they were throwing a cordon in the area. In the initial exchange of firing, two militant have been killed and their bodies have been recovered, they said. The identity and the group affiliation of the slain was being ascertained, they said.

Meanwhile, a soldier was killed after Pakistani forces allegedly attacked an army posts in Machil sectors of Kupwara early morning.

In the incident, a soldier identified as Lance Naik Rajender Singh of 57 RR was killed. They said soldiers manning the fence responded strongly to “unprovoked” firing.
