Gunfight starts in Malbagh area in Srinagar

Srinagar: A gunfight broke out between militants and a joint team of police and CRPF in Malbagh area of Central Kashmir’s Srinagar district on Thursday evening.
Official sources said a joint team of the Police’s SOG and paramilitary CRPF launched a cordon-and-search-operation in the area amid specific inputs about the presence of the militants.
As the joint team approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them. The fire was retaliated by the joint team, triggering off an encounter.
A senior Police officer confirmed the exchange of firing between militants and forces in Malbagh area. When reports last came in, the firefight was going on.
“Encounter has started at Malbagh area of Srinagar. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow,” police tweeted. (file picture used)
