Sumbal minor’s rape case: Police files challan in 17 days, charges accused under POCSO, RPC

Srinagar: Police on Saturday filed a chargesheet in a court against the accused in the alleged rape of a 3-year-old child in Bandipora district.
An official said that the police filed the chargesheet within 17 days from the commission of the alleged crime on May 8.
A police spokesman said police station Sumbal received a written complaint by a person stating that her niece (name withheld) was taken by a person namely Tahir Ahmad Mir of Sumbal and took her inside Govt Middle School and assaulted her.
Acting on this complaint, a case FIR No. 81 /2019 was registered in police station Sumbal, and the accused person was apprehended. The victim was referred to SDH Sumbal for medical examination , from where she was referred to JVC Hospital Srinagar.
In order to speed up the process of investigation a SIT comprising of SDPO Sumbal, SHO PS-Sumbal and Sr. PO was constituted.
The medical examination of the victim was conducted and the material evidence was collected from spot and sent to FSL Srinagar.
“The oral testimonies and scientific evidence substantiated the charges leveled against the accused person and today the chargesheet has been filed in special court of District and session judge Bandipora under section 5(m),06 of POCSO, 363,342 and 376 RPC within a period of 17 days from the occurrence of the incident,” the spokesman added.
Widespread protests broke out across Kashmir and one of the protesters was killed in clashes in Pattan area of north Kashmir.
