Srinagar-Leh road: Expected to open in next few hours, Kargil bound traffic to ply

Ganderbal: Srinagar Leh road might be opened for the vehicular time at 12pm today as debris clearance operation at Bajri Nalla is almost complete.

The road was closed for traffic following a landslide at at Bajri Nalla blocking the stretch.

Station House Officer Sonmarg Lateef Ahmad told INS that the debris clearance work is almost complete.

“Men and machinery are at work and we expect that traffic will be allowed in next few hours,” Lateef said.

He added that once road in opened only one- way traffic movement, i.e is from Sonamarg towards Kargil, will be allowed.

“No movement shall be allowed in opposite direction,” he said.

Earlier traffic department had said that  Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari Road will be open for Kargil bound traffic however the strategic stretch had to be shut following landslide.

“It was caused by incessant rains in the area,” officials said.

Both Light motor vehicles and heavy motor vehicles will be allowed to ply once declared open for vehicular movement.
