Anantnag: Food Safety Authority is considering to ban the sale of energy drink ‘Sting’ as the company failed to respond to notice served to them two weeks earlier.
Officials told INS that the ban will be imposed on the drink as the drink is for restricted use but is available in open market. “What measures have they put in place to keep the usage of the drink,” officials had asked the company.
Keeping the health hazards in mind, the AFSA had sent a Prohibitionary notice under section 34 (3) to Managing Director M/S Jai Beverages pvt ltd industrial Complex Bari Brahmna Jammu vide order No FSSA/DO/ANG/464-66 Dated 23/03/2019.
“During the inspection, Sting, a non alcoholic beverage contains 72mg caffeine and comes with a warning that it should not be consumed by children, pregnant, lactating women and persons sensitive to caffeine,” officials said.
The officials however said that the authorized dealers of ‘Sting’ on inquiry ‘showed their ignorance regarding the restricted use of the product.’
On 23/03/2019 the Food safety department Anantnag had sent a Prohibitionary notice under section 34 (3) to company to explain as to what satisfactory steps have been taken to ensure the safety of the consumers in light of the restricted use of the food item in question within a period of three days.
“Thirteen days have passed and there is no response. It is highly insensitive approach,” officials said.
The notice served to the company reads that excessive use of caffeinated food products can prove fatal for its consumers.
“The sale of the product requires a proper system to be in place for ensuring its restricted use by the consumers,” notice reads.
Inspector of Food safety Department Anantnag, INS, said that they have already received complaints from the parents that their children feel bad after use this caffeinated “sting“ drink.
“We have already sent another notice to company under the law. If they fail to explain again then a recommendation to ban the sale of the drink will be made,” he said.
