Shopian man succumbs, 27 days after lactating mother’s killing in same incident

Shopian: A civilian died of a gunshot wound nearly 27 days after the bullet was allegedly fired by government forces in Shopian district of south Kashmir. With the civilian, Mohammad Ayoub Mir of Molu Chitragam, succumbing to the wounds, the death toll has risen to four, two of them bmilitants. The other one was a civilian woman, 24-year-old Rubeena Jan (Beauty Jan) and she was killed when her milk sucking baby was in her lap.

Mohammad Ayoub Mir who was hit by a bullet during clashes with government forces at Batmaran- Wanpora area on December 19 and he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning. Two houses were also razed to ground by government forces during the gunfight fight.

According to a petition filed before State Huma Rights Commission, the woman was sitting in house with her milk sucking baby in her lap when she was hit by a bullet pumped by government forces who were engaged in controlling a protesting mob after a gunfight in the area. The incident, as per the complaint before the SHRC, suggests that the forces were “indiscriminately pumping and spraying bullets unmindful of its consequences.”

The government forces were expected to follow the standard operation procedures (SOPs) prescribed by law and the rules which they have not followed at all, adds the compliant.
