Srinagar: Notwithstanding curfew, frenzied mobs on Saturday carried fresh attacks on quarters of Kashmiris putting up in Jammu, a day after widespread violence that saw around nearly three dozen vehicles belonging to a particular community reduced to ashes and more than 50 more damaged during a bandh called by the Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industries and Bar Association in the state’s winter capital.
Reports said that stones were pelted on quarters of Kashmiris at Janipur and there were no immediate reports about injury to anyone so far. The people accused police of looking other way and standing with attackers. However, senior police officers could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
The attack comes despite the curfew imposed by district magistrate at around 2:30 p.m. on yesterday continued unrelaxed officially even as army has been deployed in strength across the Jammu city and around other sensitive parts.
There was violence yesterday at multiple locations including Gujjar Nagar, Shahidi Chowk, Janipur, Purani Mandi, Pacca Danga, Rehari, Residency Road, New Plot, Gummat, Prem Nagar and Narwal.
The protesters, mostly students of Jammu University and several colleges, were holding Indian flags on their bikes and raising slogans against Pakistan and militants carried marches throughout the city and resorted to violence against members of a particular community including those from Kashmir.
The mobs attacked vehicles of the particular community and set them ablaze. Mostly, vehicles bearing registration number were targeted.
