Shutdown, restrictions in Kashmir mark Maqbool Bhat’s 35th hanging anniversary

Srinagar: A complete shutdown is being observed on the hanging anniversary of Maqbool Bhat even as authorities imposed restrictions in parts of downtown here and Kupwara, the native district of the JKLF founder. Bhat was hanged and buried in Tihar jail, New Delhi on Feb 11, 1984.Reports said, strict restrictions have been imposed by the authorities in parts of this summer capital Srinagar’s downtown locality including Nowhatta, housing historic Jamia Masjid, and adjoining areas.
Residents said that contingents of government forces arrived early in the morning. Reports said that business establishments and shops are closed as markets wear a deserted look in Srinagar. However, private vehicles are seen plying in the parts of Srinagar.Similar reports were also received from other areas of the Valley including Kupwara, Baramulla Bandipora, Budgam, Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian and Anantnag. Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had called for complete shutdown on the hanging anniversary of Bhat.
