2 more militants killed as Shopian gunfight ends, toll 7

Srinagar: The encounter between militants and government forces at Batagund area of Shopian has ended with the killing of seven persons on either side, officials said.

While militants suffered six casualties, army counted for one in the shape of a territorial soldier identified as Naik Nazir Ahmad. The identity of the slain militants was not officially revealed but sources said that the dead include a top commander each of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen and Lashker-e-Toiba.

“Two more (militants) killed. Total Six (militants) killed. Weapons and warlike stores recovered. One soldier also (killed). Operation over,” a defense ministry spokesman, Col Rajesh kalia said.

The operation was jointly conducted by team of army’s 34RR, CRPF and SOG Shopian, the officials said.
