Shopian gunfight: Civilian killed in clashes, five of six killed militants identified, Death toll 8

Srinagar:: A civilian was killed in the clashes near the encounter site in Shopian on Sunday, taking the death toll to eight including six militants and a army man.

The civilian was identified as Namaan Ashraf Bhat of Baloosa Kulgam. Initial reports say that among the injured is a five year old girl. “She has been referred to Srinagar,” reports claimed.

Police sources claimed that the militants killed in the gunfight have been identified as well.

He identified them as
1.Umar Majid Ganie alias Gazalha alias Hamzullah S/o Abdul Majid Ganai r/o Shuch, kulgam.

He belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen and was an A++ category militant. He had joined militant ranks on 10 Dec 2015.

2. Waseem Ah Wagay S/o Abdul Hamid Wagay, Amshipura, Shopian, belonged to HM and was category A militant. He had joined HM on  07 Dec 2016.

3.Mustaq Ahmad Mir alias Hamid S/o Gulam Hassan Mir r/o Chakcholan, Shopian. He belonged to Laskhar e Taiba outfit and was an A++ category militant and had joined LeT on 27 Jun 2014.

4. Abbas Ah Bhat s/o Abdul Zubar Bhat r/o Mantrabug, Shopian. He was affiliated with HM and was category A militant. He joined militant ranks on 25 September 2016.

5.Khalid Farooq Malik alias Abu Talha s/o Farooq Ahmad Malik r/o Bagander, Alyalpora, Shopian and was affiliated with HM. He was category C militant and had joined ranks on 14 Apr 2018.

“The identification of sixth militant is being ascertained, however it is assumed he is a foreign militant,” he said.

One Army man too was killed in the fierce gunfight, was identified as Nk Nazir Ahmad of 162 TA R/O Kulgam,, while another army man was injured in the firefight.

“He was identified Sepoy Sunil of 34RR. He has gunshot wound in right hand,” sources said.

Earlier a nocturnal gunfight broke out between militants and government forces in Shopian village. The operation was jointly conducted by Army, SOG of JK Police and CRPF.

Clashes broke out in the area in which three civilians were injured including two critically wounded.
