Srinagar: Government on Friday disallowed the congregational prayers at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar by imposing stringent restrictions in and around Nowhatta and adjoining areas.
Eyewitnesses said that the government forces deployed in strength in the area erected iron barricades and concertina wires at all the entry and exit points of the roads leading to the historic Jamia Masjid and did not allow people to proceed towards the Masjid.
Meanwhile Kashmir’s chief priest Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said that he was not allowed to even attend the Majlis-e-Tableeg to pay tribute to Imam Hussain (RA).
He said that the government did not allow Friday prayers in many mosques including Jamia Masjid.
In a tweet he said: “Curbs curfew & HouseArrests continue, even on #Aashura ! No Friday prayers allowed at many mosques in the city including #JamaMasjid by the rulers. Even majlis-e-tableeg to pay tributes to #ImamHussian(AS) and #MartyrsOfKarbala which I was going to address, barred! (SIC).”
