Srinagar: The Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed for second consecutive day on Sunday, leaving over 2000 passengers stranded on the thoroughfare, the only surface link connecting Kashmir Valley with the rest of the world.
SSP traffic Shakti Kumar Pathak told INS that more than 900 vehicles were stranded on the strategic highway and efforts were underway to restore it for traffic. Among the stranded vehicles include passenger ones, he said. “It may still take around 3p.m. to make the road worth travel,” he said, adding, “only stranded traffic will be cleared today and no fresh traffic will be allowed either from Jammu or Srinagar.”
The clearance operation is underway in Magarkote sector of the highway which was hit by the landslides on Saturday.
The officer also advised travellers to contact traffic control rooms in Jammu and Srinagar before undertaking a journey.
