Srinagar: With Eid-ul-Azha few days away, sale of sacrificial animals in the Kashmir Valley has started to gain momentum as buyers haggle for best animal.
Hundreds of sheep and goat could be seen scattered in Eidgah, the oldest makeshift market for rams and goats in the old city here.
Hard bargaining is the order of the day as buyers try to strike a favourable deal, particularly in the current high inflation phase.
Besides sprawling grounds in Old City, many small makeshifts markets have also sprung in parts of this summer capital while goatherds with the livestock can be seen darting various parts of city for customers.
The herdsmen bring the livestock from far flung areas of the state to the Srinagar and their hardship seems to be paying off amid arbitrary rates.
“I purchased three sheep each costing Rs 12 000,” Ghulam Mohammad Malik, a businessman from Lal Bazar area in downtown area of the city, said
While as Malik did not seem to be bothered about the exuberant rates, there were buyers who were seen bargaining with the sellers.
The festival, to commemorate Prophet Abrahim’s (AS) submission to Allah’s will be celebrated in this part of the world from Wednesday.
Prophet Abrahim (AS) was ordered to sacrifice his beloved son prophet Ismail (AS). At the last minute, when the father’s blade was about to slit the son’s throat, a goat from heaven replaced prophet Ismail (AS).
