As per officials in the traffic police, the inspector general had asked the traders to remove the encroachment on their own to pave way for smooth traffic on the busy road. However, the claim could not be independently verified.

On Thursday afternoon, the IGP visited the area along with team of police and Srinagar Municipal Corporation. Soon bulldozer arrived at the scene and action under law followed against the encroachments.

Basant Rath oversaw the dismantling, sources said.
