Srinagar:  Police on Wednesday said that it arrested three rumourmongers including the one who has spread fake news rumour about the death of a girl after braid chopping incident at Habba Kadal here.
“A shocking rumour about the death of an allegedly braid chopped victim from Habbakadal Srinagar spread like the wild fire. Most of the people got panicked and sense of insecurity and torments prevailed all over. People got emotional and started pelting stones at forces establishments and vehicles,” a police spokesman said, adding, “Police swung into action and on testing the authenticity of the news, it was found that it was a planned rumour just to generate the potential for civil unrest.”
The police identified and arrested youth, Abid Hussain Saudagar, from Armpora Nawakadal area, he said.
Police also arrested two more persons who floated the rumours about rag pickers as braid choppers.
“On October 9 some miscreants floated a rumour that four rag pickers from outside J&K who were roaming nearby at village Gandbal, Lasjan as braid choppers. Soon the outsiders were surrounded by a mob of about 2000 persons who started abusing and hacking them. Meanwhile police intervened and rescued all the four rag pickers,” the spokesman said. A case FIR (116/2017) under section336, 353, 341 was registered and investigation of the case was taken up.
“During the investigation, two rumourmongers namely Tawseef Ahmad Dar son of Zahoor Ahmad Dar of Padshahi Bagh Srinagar and Mir Musadiq son of Fayaz Ahmad Mir of Lasjan have been arrested. Further investigation is of the case is going on,” he added.
