Budgam: In a first incident of its kind in Kashmir Valley, unknown persons chopped of beard of an Imam in Budgam district of central Kashmir on Friday. The incident comes amid spike in incidents of braid chopping of fairer gender including minor girls in the Valley in last more than three weeks.
Official sources said unknown persons caught hold of Molvi Ghulam Nabi Ghorsi, Imam of Masjid in Futlipora village of Chrar-e-Sharief Budgam and chopped off his beard. Ghorsi was on way to Masjid to lead Fajr (dawn) prayers when he was intercepted.
Station House Officer Zahoor Ahmad told INS that Ghorsi fell unconscious and only after he raised hue and cry, people, who had assembled inside Masjid, came to know about the incident and rescued him.
The ‘unknown persons’ had fled by then, the officer said. Police has taken cognizance of the incident and started investigation.
