Srinagar: Police on Wednesday detained several Anganwari workers who are on hunger strike demanding increase in their wages and regularization.
Eyewitnesses told INS that a police party visited press-enclave at 8am and asked protesters to report at police station Kothibagh.
The state Aanganwari Association leaders turned down police’s request and one of the protester alleged misbehaviour with them. “Police tore my pajama while dragging me into the vehicle,” one of the detained protester told INS.
A senior Anganwari worker said police resorted to “brutal action” without any reason. “There was no attempt of self-immolation today but despite that our leaders and other members were detained.”
The protester ‘wowed to continue their battle for their rights until the demands are met’.
Anganwari workers said that government is resorting to ‘injustice’ by paying Rs 3600 as salary. “Government is exploiting us. Aren’t they aware of what kind of work Anganwari workers do? From pulse-polio-day to election duty we risk our lives,” a protester Fahmeeda said.
