Srinagar: A day after Chief Minister Mehbboba Mufti urged New Delhi and Islamabad to end hostilities, an army soldier on Wednesday was killed and three others injured in a ‘sniper fire’ by Pakistan Rangers at Keran sector along the Line of Control in north Kashmir Kupwara district.
Reports said that Pakistan Rangers in violation of the ceasefire opened the sniper fire at 5/9 GR unit of the army near in Keran sector around noon.
One soldier identified as Rajesh Khatri who was airlifted along with other injured to army’s 92-base hospital at Badamibagh here was declared as brought dead by the doctors who attended upon him.
The reports said that army retaliated the fire and intermitted firing was going on in the area.
Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday sought an end to hostilities between two neighbours on the borders, asking them to ponder achievements of the enmity between them for 70 years.
Addressing a public meeting at Karnah in Tangdhar area of the frontier district,Mehbooba had appealed the leadership of both the countries to work for maintaining peace on the borders.
She said the people of Jammu and Kashmir were the worst victims of the hostility which has led to the killing of people, dislocations and damages to the property on both the sides. She said the skirmishes along the border areas in the State have led people to frequent migrations and leading to a life of pitiable conditions.
Mehbooba said peace in the State and between the two South Asian neighbours holds key to the progress and development in the region. She said it was very unfortunate that when people should have been demanding facilities of schools, hospitals, playfields and hospitals, they are forced to seek construction of bunkers to save them from firepower. She said it was a point to ponder as to what have people achieved from the hostility of 70 years.
