Srinagar: Police on Friday said that people mistook a mentally retarded person as a braid chopper and ruthlessly beat him in Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

“Police got information that a mob had got hold of an alleged braid chopper in fruit mandi area (Sopore). Immediately a police party rushed to spot and found that a mob was beating one person ruthlessly. The miscreants had also burnt some grass and were trying to set the person ablaze. Some miscreants were trying to run a tractor over him,” a police official said.

The person was rescued and identified as Wasim Ahmad Tantray, reportedly mentally challenged, Son of Ghulam Nabi of Shakwara at present Puth Khah Nowpora Sopore.

“The person was immediately rushed to SDH Sopore and his condition is stated to be critical and has been referred to Srinagar,” police said, adding, a case has been registered and “the culprits involved have been identified.”
