Srinagar: Even though the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Syed Abid Rasheed Shah has ordered ban on the sale and bursting of firecrackers in Srinagar, the loud bangs were heard in last two evenings as the people here were celebrating Diwali, a festival.

Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar on October 10 this year had ordered blanket ban on the sale and bursting of firecrackers within the territorial jurisdiction of district Srinagar. The order was issued to ensure the safety of life and property of the general public.

Senior Superintendent of Police was also directed to implement the order in letter and spirit.

However, there seem no takers of the order on ground as people continued to burst firecrackers on Tuesday and Wednesday evening till midnight in view of Diwali.

Notably, Diwali, the festival of lights, was celebrated with religious fervor in Kashmir. Apart from the Kashmiri Pandit community, students from outside the state, non-residents, and troopers celebrated the festival with traditional gaiety.

Meanwhile, a local resident from Srinagar, Ashiq Ahmad said that the loud bangs were heard across Srinagar till the midnight. “I thought the people have stopped bursting firecrackers in view of the orders imposed of DC Srinagar but on ground the situation was quite different,” he said.

He said that it seems that the ban on sale and bursting of firecrackers was not implemented completely, thus continuing to leave the properties of people here at risk.
