Ramban, October 12: Adv. Fairoz Khan, Congress leader, expressed serious concern over the UT Level Under-19, 17, and 14 Boys and Girls Chess Championship being organized at Prem Palace, Batote — a bar and hotel.
Calling the decision “unfortunate and unacceptable,” he said such venues are entirely inappropriate for youth and educational events.
“Sports programs meant to inspire and guide our students should be organized in dignified and proper places — preferably at the District Headquarters, Ramban, or in recognized educational or sports institutions,” he stated.
Adv. Khan pointed out that the programme was officially announced to be held from October 9 to Oct. 20 and boys and girls have to stay for a three-day and two-night stays, but reports suggest it was actually conducted for just one night, raising serious questions about transparency and fund utilization.
“There seems to be something questionable here — and the authorities should thoroughly examine the matter,” he added.
He confirmed that the issue has been brought to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner, Ramban, who responded promptly and assured immediate action.
Adv. Khan appreciated the DC’s swift response but insisted that those responsible for selecting the venue and managing the event must be held accountable to maintain the credibility and purpose of youth programmes.
