Srinagar, July 29: National Conference (NC) President Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday urged the Central Government to speak out on the reported situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), saying that if New Delhi considers the region an integral part of India, it cannot remain silent over reports of killings and alleged human rights violations there.

Talking to reporters in Srinagar, Abdullah said he had appealed to the United Nations Human Rights Commission, the Prime Minister, and the External Affairs Minister to intervene and take note of the reported developments in PoK.

He said the Government of India frequently reiterates that PoK is an integral part of the country, but questioned why it has not publicly condemned the reported killings and hardships faced by people in the region.

“If PoK is our part, then the Government should raise its voice over what is happening there. It should speak against the killings and ensure that the concerns of the people are addressed,” Abdullah said.

The NC president also voiced support for the ongoing student protests in Jammu and Kashmir, warning that the agitation would continue if the authorities failed to fulfil the commitments made to students.

He alleged that instead of addressing their grievances, students were being subjected to FIRs, arrests and harassment, which, he said, could further intensify the movement.

Abdullah also expressed serious concern over the increasing menace of drug abuse among the youth, describing unemployment as one of the biggest challenges confronting Jammu and Kashmir.

Referring to the security measures following the recent Anantnag incident, Abdullah claimed that thousands of people had been detained and several houses demolished. He appealed to the authorities to adopt a balanced approach and avoid actions that could further alienate the people.

He reiterated the need for dialogue, justice and employment opportunities to address the concerns of the youth and maintain peace and stability in the region. (KNC)
