Srinagar, June 11: In a major initiative aimed at promoting renewable energy and reducing the electricity burden on economically weaker sections, the government is set to provide free-of-cost solar rooftop systems to around 2.25 lakh families belonging to the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) category across Kashmir.

Official sources told The INS that the ambitious programme is being rolled out as part of the government’s efforts to accelerate the adoption of clean energy while ensuring energy security for vulnerable households. Under the scheme, eligible AAY beneficiaries will receive rooftop solar installations without any financial contribution from their side.

Sources revealed that the tendering process for the project will be initiated shortly, paving the way for the large-scale installation of solar rooftop units across the Valley. The project is expected to be implemented in a phased manner to ensure timely execution and quality standards.

Officials said the initiative is expected to significantly reduce electricity expenses for beneficiary families while contributing to the government’s broader renewable energy targets. The programme will also help decrease dependence on conventional power sources and support environmental sustainability through the generation of clean energy.

With nearly 2.25 lakh AAY households set to benefit, the scheme is being viewed as one of the largest social-sector renewable energy interventions in the region.

The government believes the initiative will not only improve access to affordable energy but also enhance the quality of life for economically disadvantaged families.

Authorities are expected to finalize the tendering process in the coming month (July), following which groundwork for the installation of solar rooftop systems will commence across various districts of Kashmir.

Further details regarding implementation timelines, technical specifications, and district-wise coverage are expected to be announced after the completion of the tendering process.
