Srinagar, Apr 27: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena on Monday announced the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory, terming it a “historic decision” aimed at fulfilling a long-pending demand of the people.
The newly created districts include Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass, taking the total number of districts in Ladakh from two to seven.
In a statement, the Lieutenant Governor said the decision, approved earlier by the Ministry of Home Affairs under the leadership of Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is a significant step towards strengthening grassroots governance and decentralising administration in the region.
He said the creation of new districts will ensure faster and more efficient delivery of public services, particularly benefiting people living in remote and far-flung areas of Ladakh.
The Lieutenant Governor further stated that the move is expected to open new avenues for development, employment and entrepreneurship, while bringing governance closer to the people.
Reaffirming his commitment, he said the administration will ensure that the benefits of this major decision reach every citizen, paving the way for a stronger, more developed and prosperous Ladakh.
