Srinagar, Apr 15: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said the government is focusing on strengthening tourism and local industries by creating new experiences for visitors and formulating a fresh industrial policy to boost investment in Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking to media persons, the Chief Minister said the tourism season has begun with the Tulip Garden and efforts are underway to introduce more attractions for visitors.

“The tourism season has started with the Tulip Garden, and now we are working on bringing new things so that tourists have more to explore and experience here,” he said.

He highlighted the importance of showcasing Kashmir’s rich handicraft heritage, saying platforms like “Know Your Artisan” are aimed at bringing all traditional crafts, including Pashmina, Kani shawls, chain stitch, wood carving and copper work under one roof for tourists and locals alike.

The Chief Minister said the initiative will help people better understand the value and skill of local artisans and encouraged residents of Srinagar and nearby areas to visit and support such programmes.

Referring to the industrial sector, he said the previous incentive policy had ended and the government is now working on a new, more effective policy.

“We are trying to frame a policy that actually benefits people on the ground. Earlier, incentives were given, but there was little impact in terms of investment or industrial growth,” he said.

He added that feedback is being taken from existing entrepreneurs as well as prospective investors to design a balanced and practical policy that can revive industrial activity in the region.

On a proposed bill at the Centre, the Chief Minister said discussions would be held at a meeting of the INDIA bloc in Delhi before taking a final stand.

“We will discuss the issue collectively and then decide our response, both inside and outside Parliament,” he said, adding that concerns remain over whether such measures truly benefit the common people. (KNC)
