Jammu, Feb 27: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has launched a major crackdown on alleged illegal mining activities by conducting joint surprise checks (JSCs) across Udhampur and Reasi districts over the past two days, officials said.

Official sources said that the operation was initiated following complaints regarding large-scale illegal extraction of minerals in parts of the Jammu division. There were also allegations of a possible nexus between certain mineral bidders and officials of the Mining and Ecological Departments, prompting the Bureau to undertake coordinated inspections.

Specialised ACB teams led by gazetted officers carried out surprise inspections at multiple stone crusher units functioning in both districts to verify compliance with mining regulations and environmental norms.

During the course of inspections, the teams conducted searches at various sites and seized electronic gadgets, official records and other relevant documents for scrutiny, officials said.

According to sources, several ‘Form-A’ transit documents suspected to be forged were also recovered from some of the operational units, raising questions about the legality of mineral transportation.

Preliminary findings suggest that a number of stone crusher units were allegedly operating in violation of prescribed terms and conditions, including norms related to environmental safeguards and authorised extraction limits.

Officials said the Bureau is examining whether the violations resulted in loss to the public exchequer and ecological damage in the region.

The ACB has reiterated its commitment to curbing corruption and preventing unlawful exploitation of natural resources in Jammu and Kashmir.

Further investigation into the matter is underway, and action as warranted under law will be taken upon completion of the inquiry, officials added.
