Believe in Your Roots, Build With Confidence: VP Radhakrishnan to Graduates at KU’s 21st Convocation

Srinagar, Feb 26: Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Thursday urged the graduating students of the University of Kashmir to develop confidence in their own capabilities and move beyond inherited colonial-era thinking, saying true progress begins with self-belief and cultural strength.

Addressing the 21st Convocation ceremony, Vice President emphasized that young minds must focus on innovation grounded in local realities, knowledge traditions and community needs. He said students should not feel inferior or dependent on external validation, stressing that intellectual independence is essential for meaningful growth.

Referring to India’s response during the COVID-19 pandemic, he said the country demonstrated resilience and scientific strength by developing effective vaccines at a critical time, proving that determination and collective effort can overcome global challenges.

Highlighting major infrastructure projects in Jammu and Kashmir, including the expansion of Srinagar International Airport and the Chenab Rail Bridge, Radhakrishnan said connectivity fosters unity. He noted that when regions are linked, people interact more closely, strengthening bonds across cultures and communities.

The Vice President also spoke about scholarship initiatives for students of Jammu and Kashmir, stating that exposure to institutions across the country has helped broaden perspectives and promote mutual understanding.

Expressing concern over rising drug abuse, he appealed to students to remain vigilant and stay away from narcotics, reminding them that their success is the greatest happiness for their parents. He also advised moderation in social media use, cautioning that discipline and time management are essential for long-term success.

Concluding with a message of collective belonging, he stressed unity over division and encouraged students to uphold values of respect, responsibility and harmony. (KNC)
