Govt appoints Nodal Officer for welfare of J&K residents, students in Iran

Srinagar, Jan 15: In response to the ongoing situation in Iran, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has designated a senior officer as a nodal point to ensure the safety and welfare of residents and students from the Union Territory currently in the Iran.

An order issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) names Anil Sharma, JKAS, the Additional Resident Commissioner of the J&K Government in New Delhi, to the post.

The officer’s mandate, as outlined in the order, is to coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Embassy and consular authorities in Iran, and other relevant agencies. His responsibilities will include facilitating information sharing, coordinated interventions, travel assistance, and all matters pertaining to the well-being of J&K residents in Iran.

This administrative step follows a statement earlier in the day by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who confirmed he had discussed the evolving situation with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.

Chief Minister Abdullah stated that the government is closely monitoring developments and that the Ministry of External Affairs is formulating a comprehensive plan. He expressed appreciation for the assurances and proactive measures being undertaken by the Ministry to safeguard the lives and interests of Indian citizens from Jammu and Kashmir in Iran.
