New Delhi, Jan 8: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has formally notified the timeline for the house listing phase of the Census of India 2027, scheduling the nationwide exercise from April 1 to September 30, 2026, across all States and Union Territories.
As per a notification issued by the Office of the Registrar General, India, the house listing operation will be conducted for a duration of 30 days in each State and Union Territory, with the specific dates to be decided individually within the notified period.
The notification, issued under the Census Act, 1948 and the Census Rules, 1990, replaces an earlier order dated January 7, 2020, while safeguarding actions already taken under the previous notification.
The Centre has also provided for a self-enumeration facility in the upcoming Census. Officials said the self-enumeration option will be available for 15 days immediately before the commencement of the door-to-door house listing exercise.
The house listing operation is a vital preparatory phase of the Census, involving the collection of data on buildings, households and basic civic amenities, which serves as the groundwork for the subsequent population enumeration.
The notification has been signed by Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India. (KNC)
