Kargil, Sep 26: In the wake of the detention of environmentalist and social activist Sonam Wangchuk, the Kargil district administration on Friday imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code 2023, banning large gatherings and public rallies.

The announcement, made through loudspeakers this late afternoon afternoon, barred assemblies of five or more persons until further notice.

Authorities also made it mandatory for organizers to secure prior written permission for any procession, march, or demonstration.

Confirming the development, the Station House Officer, police station Kargil said: “The prohibitory orders will continue till further orders, and nobody will be allowed to disturb the peace.” Heavy deployment of police and paramilitary personnel has been placed across the district to prevent flare-ups and to ensure strict enforcement of the orders.

The decision comes amid heightened tensions across Ladakh following Wangchuk’s detention and earlier clashes in Leh, where violent protests linked to demands for Sixth Schedule safeguards and the restoration of statehood left four civilians dead.

In Leh district, restrictions on movement and gatherings have remained in force since September 24, when protests organized by the Apex Body turned violent. The administration there has enforced curbs to prevent escalation and is closely monitoring the situation.

Officials said the measures in Kargil are preventive in nature and aimed at ensuring law and order during a sensitive period. They urged locals to cooperate with the authorities and avoid circulating provocative content that could incite unrest. (KNT)
