Srinagar, Sep 03: The river Jhelum has once again swelled in Kashmir amis the heavy rainfall while the Jammu division is reeling under constant threat of floods as the water levels in the rivers are presently above the danger mark.
The officials in the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Kashmir said that the water level in river Jhelum is gradually increasing but the situation is currently under control.
As per the gauge readings at 10:00 AM today, Jhelum’s level at Sangam stood at 21.51 ft (against 21’ flood mark), Pampore at 3.64 m (against 4.5 m), Ram Munshi Bagh at 14.09 ft (against 18’), Asham at 7.94 ft (against 14’) and Wullar Lake at 1576.55 m.
Similarly, water levels in tributaries were recorded at Vishow Nallah Khudwani 11.00 m, which is above the danger mark.
Meanwhile, an independent weather forecaster Faizan Keng cautioned that water levels at Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh may surpass the flood declaration mark and even breach the danger level today. “A sharp rise is expected, and people must remain alert while taking early safety measures,” he said.
As a precautionary measure, all schools and colleges have been closed, while the Cluster University of Kashmir has postponed all its exams for today.
Meanwhile, several roads, including the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, Mughal Road, Srinagar–Sonamarg–Ganderbal (SSG) Road and Sinthan Road, have been closed for vehicular movement following landslides, mudslides and shooting stones at multiple locations, officials said on Wednesday.
The officials said that continuous rainfall across the region has triggered disruptions, making road travel unsafe.
Restoration work is underway at affected stretches, but authorities have advised people not to undertake any journey until the weather improves and clearance operations are completed.
“People are requested not to pay heed to any rumours and to follow only official advisories regarding road status,” officials added.
