Srinagar: Government forces on Friday imposed strict restrictions in Kashmir’s capital city Srinagar to foil the Joint Resistance Leadership called protest against the Kulgam civilian and militant killings in Kashmir.
Personnel of Jammu and Kashmir police and other paramilitary forces patrolled streets and enforced a security lockdown in the downtown neighborhoods in anticipation of pro-freedom protests, witnesses said.
Businesses, schools and shops remained shut and public transport stayed off the roads in the area.
Historic Mughal era Jamia Masjid Masjid ion the heart of downtown has been locked. “All gates of the masjid have been locked and people are not allowed to assemble for the congregational prayers at the mosque,” witnesses added.
The Joint resistance leadership of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik has asked people to protest against the recent civilian killings in Kulgam, militant killings and arrest spree against youth.
