“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence,” Trump said on social media. “Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote on X.

Pakistan confirms agreement

Confirming the development, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar wrote on X, “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect.”

India’s DGMO confirms ceasefire from 5pm IST today

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said during a press briefing as per JKNS said, “Pakistan’s Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) called Indian DGMO at 15:35 hours earlier this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time.”

Misri said instructions were issued to ground units on both sides to implement the agreement. “The Directors General of Military Operations will talk again on the 12th of May at 1200 hours,” he added.

Tensions between India and Pakistan had escalated sharply over the past week, with heavy cross-border firing reported in multiple sectors along the Line of Control (LoC). There were also concerns about potential aerial and naval movements amid heightened military readiness on both sides.

The international community, including the United Nations and several global powers, had urged both countries to exercise restraint. The United States had taken an active role in backchannel diplomacy over the past 72 hours, holding separate discussions with New Delhi and Islamabad.

It is important to note that the escalation between India and Pakistan began after the April 22 terror attack in Baisaran, Pahalgam, where terrorists attacked tourists killing 26 of them, including one lical from Pahalgam, and injuring several others. The victims included tourists from various parts of the country who had come to visit the scenic valley. This brutal assault triggered a strong military response from India, with targeted strikes on terror camps across the LoC in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The incident marked one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in the region in recent years and set off a chain of cross-border hostilities that now appear to be de-escalating with the ceasefire agreement.
