Under ‘Viksit Bharat’, GDC Gbl celebrates ‘Arbor Day’

Ganderbal, Mar 20: Department of Botany, Government Degree College Ganderbal in collaboration with College Eco Club celebrated the Arbor Day on Wednesday to raise awareness on the importance of tree plantation.

College Principal Prof Fouzia Fatima was the chief guest on the occasion.

In her special remarks, Prof Fatima congratulated the students for participating in the programme in large numbers. She urged the students to become ambassadors of tree plantation and help combat the deleterious impacts of climate change.

Acknowledging the efforts of the Department of Botany and the College Eco Club, the Principal stressed on holding such programmes regularly so that students become fully conscious of their responsibilities towards environment conservation.

Dr Shabana Aslam from Department of Botany, Coordinator of the programme and Convenor College Eco Club welcomed the chief guest, other guests and student participants.

Saying that today’s programme was held under the aegis of events related to Viksit Bharat@2047, Dr Shabana also highlighted the importance of Arbor Day celebrations and the role of student community in creating awareness on environmental issues.

Dr Mehreen Khaleel , Scientist and Conservation Biologist was the speaker at the awareness. She delivered a talk on importance of plantation of trees and role of students in restoring the green spaces around their vicinities.

Student speakers from Department of Botany including Bisma Ali, Neelofer Jan, Showkat Ahmed Sheikh, Shugufta Anjum Neelofar Jan spoke about varied aspects related to the theme.

Neelofar Jan and Saika Maqbool, students of 6th semester Botany conducted the proceedings of the event.

Certificates of participation were presented to the student speakers by the College Principal.

Prof. Tabasum Habib, Assistant Professor Botany and also one of the coordinators presented the formal vote of thanks.

Heads of various departments and other faculty members were also present on the occasion, besides the non-teaching staff of the Botany Department.
