Srinagar, Jan 31: At least seven passengers have died while several others sustained injuries after a vehicle they were travelling in met with an accident on Wednesday afternoon.

Reports said that a passenger vehicle skidded off the road fell into a 200-ft deep gorge at Boniyar area of Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, resulting in the on spot death of seven persons and grievous injuries to many others.

The deceased have been identified as Tahira Begum (35), wife of Reyaz Ahmad Sheikh, Ameena Bano (17), daughter of Abdul Gani Sheikh, Mohd Maqbool Sheikh (70), son of Ahmad Sheikh, Mohd Maqsood Sheikh (35), son of Gh Rasool Sheikh of Bujthalan, Abdul Rehman Lone (60), son of Fatah Lone, Sameena Begum (45), wife of Abdul Hameed Sheikh and Sarwa Begum (55), wife of Late Ghulam Mohd Bakhshi.

They said that the bodies have been recovered while the injured persons have been shifted to the hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in a post on X said that expressed grief over the loss of lives in twin accidents.

“Deeply saddened by the tragic accidents in Baramulla & Kishtwar. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of those injured,” Office of LG J&K, wrote.

“An ex-gratia of Rs. 5 lakh to be given to the next of kin of those who have lost their lives in the tragedies. The injured would be given Rs. 1 lakh. Directed the district administrations to provide all possible assistance to the families expeditiously,” the post added.
