Jammu, Apr 14: At least sixty two people were injured after a footbridge collapsed during Baisakhi celebrations in Udhampur district on Friday afternoon.

An official said that that a steel footbridge collapsed at Beni Sangam in Bain village in Udhampur when a large number of locals were over it in connection with Baisakhi festival celebrations.

The injured persons have been evacuated from the site to a nearby hospital for immediate treatment, the official said. They said condition of all the injured is stated to be “stable.” A police officer said that a case has been registered and further investigations taken up.

Deputy Commissioner, Krittika Jyotsna visited District Hospital Udhampur to assess the medical facilities being provided to those injured in the Beni Sangam Foot Bridge collapse in Chenani block.

The incident occurred during a crowded gathering during Baisakhi Mela.  The DC interacted with the injured and instructed hospital authorities to provide the best treatment to the victims.

The Deputy Commissioner informed that district administration is monitoring the medical care being provided to the victims. A total of 62 people were injured, of which 25 were shifted to the district hospital and 5 critically injured have been referred to Government Medical College Hospital Jammu.
