Srinagar Records Lowest Ever Day Temp As Rains Plunge Mercury Across J&K

Srinagar, June 21: Rains continued in Jammu and Kashmir, bringing day temperature down by half than the normal at most places and lowest ever in Srinagar.

“Today, at 15°C, Srinagar broke record of lowest ever maximum temperature of 15.2°C recorded on 4 June 2015,” said a meteorological department here said. The temperature was over half than the normal of 29.2°C for the summer capital of J&K. Similarly, he said, Qazigund recorded 15.4°C against 27.7°C normal for the gateway town of Kashmir. Pahalgam recorded maximum of 14.0°C against normal of 25.0°C, Kupwara 14.3°C against normal of 29.8°C while Gulmarg recorded 7.5°C, recording a drop of 12.7°C than the normal.

The meteorological department said that there was significant improvement expected from forenoon of Wednesday.

“As expected, light to moderate rain occurred at most places. Widespread light to moderate rain is expected to continue across J&K till tomorrow (June 22) forenoon,” the official said, adding, “We expect significant improvement from June 22nd forenoon.”

From June 23 onwards, he said, “There’s no forecast of any major rainfall till next one week.”

Meanwhile, he said, Srinagar received 10.6 mm of rainfall in the last 38 hours till 0530 hours today and recorded a low of 13.3°C against 13.5°C on the previous night. The temperature, he said, was 2.5°C below normal during this time of the year for the summer capital.

Qazigund had 6.8 mm of rainfall during the time and recorded a low of 12.0°C against 10.4°C on the previous night. The temperature was 2.3°C ‘below’ normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Pahalgam received 4.5mm of rainfall during the time and recorded a minimum of 8.6°C against 7.6°C on the previous night. The temperature was 0.5°C below normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir during this time of the season, he said.

Kokernag had 5.4 mm of rain and recorded a low of 11.1°C against 9.3°C on the previous night. It was 3.0°C ‘below’ normal for the place in south Kashmir during this time of the season, the official said.

Gulmarg received 28.6mm of rain during the time and recorded a low of 4.6°C against 4.4°C on the previous night, the official said. While 10.2°C is normal for the world famous skiing resort during this time of the season, the official said that the temperature was 5.6°C below normal for the famous place in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir received 15.4 mm of rainfall and recorded a low of 11.3°C against 11.8°C on the previous night. The temperature was 2.8°C below normal for the district, the official said.

Jammu had 8.6 mm of rain and recorded maximum of 24.7°C and a low of 22.2°C, the official said.

The maximum temperature was 13.5 below normal and 4.3°C minimum for J&K’s winter capital, he said.
