Srinagar:  Police have registered an FIR against a Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leader and a Sarpanch here for taking Rs. 1 lakh from a jailed youth’s family ensuring his release.

Abdul Rehman Tikri, is BJP’s district president, Bandipora while Manzoor Ahmed is a Sarpanch.

The duo, reports said had unlawfully collected Rs.1 lakh from the sister of a jailed youth promising that they will secure his release.

Quoting an un named police official media reports said that an alleged criminal was detained by the district police. The family members of the youth approached Mr Tikri for ensuring their ward’s release.

“This happened despite the assurance of a fair probe by the police, his family approached them,” said a police official anonymously.

Soon after police came to know about the development, veracity of the matter was checked and it was revealed that the duo had collected the amount and promised the lady of her brother’s early release.

Police has seized the money registered an FIR No 64 u/s 420 IPC.

Tikri and Manzoor are on anticipatory bail and if found guilty, an officer said, ‘they we won’t spare them come what may.”

If anyone is found guilty, they shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to seven years, and shall also be liable to a fine.
