Srinagar, Dec 25: An army soldier was injured in an encounter in Kanigam Village of South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Friday.
A senior Police officer said that soldier was injured as militants tried to break cordon.
However, the officer said, the militants couldn’t manage to escape as security forces again engaged them.
The gunfight had ensued after a joint team of Police, Army’s 44 RR and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Kanigam this afternoon.
As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering off a gunfight. There had been lull after initial firing even as the CASO party continued to tighten the cordon in the area, officials said. “The operation is going on,’ the official added.
Earlier police in a tweet said: “Encounter has started at #Kanigam area of #Shopian. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow”.
