2 Budgam, 2 Shopian Sisters Killed in Flash Floods

Srinagar: Two sisters from Shopian and as many other sisters were killed due to flash floods triggered by heavy rains in Shopian and Budgam districts.
Reports said that the two sisters who were walking near Chotipora on the bank of a nullah were washed away due to the flash floods and drowned in the stream.
The sisters have been identified as Khalida (25) and Sumiya (23) daughters of Ghulam Mohammad Pal.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Wajahat Hussain said that soon after the incident a search operation was launched to retrieve the bodies of the duo. When reports last came in, the searches to find out the bodies were going on. Earlier, two minor sisters were killed due to flash floods triggered by heavy rains in the mountainous region of Chadoora area in central Kashmir’s Budgam district.
Reports said that the two sisters namely Rumaisa (14) and Ruksana (6) daughters of Ghulam Rasool Hajam were washed away in the flash floods at Rangwar Kul late in the afternoon.
The incident occurred when the duo was grazing the cattle in the nearby field when suddenly the flash floods hit the area amid the heavy rains, they said.
Confirming it, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Budgam Tariq Hussain Ganai said that the siblings were washed away, resulting in on the spot death of the duo.
Soon after the incident, the searches were immediately launched and recovered the bodies of the minors from a canal near Kutebal, the DC added.
The Deputy Commissioner said that Rs 8 lacs, 4 lac each, would be given as ex-gratia to the bereaved family under SDRF. (with inputs from GNS)
