Srinagar: An elderly man infected with the novel coronavirus died in a hospital here on Thursday, the first death recorded in Jammu and Kashmir due to the contagion, sources said. The deceased was aged 67 years and was a resident of Hyderpora Srinagar. He died at Chest Disease hospital.
He was in the hospital for last few days.
“Despite our best efforts, the COVID-19 positive patient at Chest Disease Hospital passed away due to cardiac arrest. The patient had medical history of illness with Sugar, hypertension, obesity,” a doctor was quoted as saying by a news agency.
Originally a resident of Sopore, the man had returned from New Delhi, UP, Jammu recently after being part of a ‘Tablighi Jamaat’ attended by people from Indonesia and Malaysia. He had tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Tuesday.
Eight persons including the 67-year-old man had tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) so far in the Kashmir Valley while the tally of such patients in the entire J&K is 11. Three cases were reported from Jammu earlier this month. The government has imposed a lockdown and has been urging people to stay home in a bid to contain the spread of the virus which has globally claimed over 21000 lives.
