Katra sees record rainfall, shuts Highway-1C

Srinagar: Katra town in Reasi district of the Jammu and Kashmir which also serves as base camp for the Hindu pilgrims visiting Vaishno Devi Shrine, recorded highest rainfall in eleven years, Director Meteorological department said on Wednesday. The record rainfall also caused landslides and shooting stones, leading to suspension of traffic movement on Highway-1C (Katra-Reasi-Pouni-Shivkhori). “There was record breaking rainfall of 292.4mm in Katra in 24 hours. Previous record is 560.6mm on 31st July 2008,” Sonam Lotus said.
He said Udampur also recorded 342mm of rain in last 24 hours till 8:30 hours along with 123.2mm in Kathua, 73.4mm in Jammu, 5mm in Bhaderwah, 3.6mm in Batote and 2.8mm in Banihal.
