Sameer Ahmad
Anantnag: Doctors in Anantnag district managed to save the life of a 70-year-old woman by removing 27.4kg from her body on Monday.
Consultant surgeon Dr Azad Malik along with team of other doctors—Dr Hamid (Anesthetist), Dr Masrat (Consultant Gynecologist), and also technical staff including among others Imtiyaz Ahmad— removed the giant size ovarian cyst at Alhayat Nursing Home in the district.
The patient, a resident of Qazigund, is said to be doing well post operatively and is expected to be discharged very soon.
Dr Malik said the patient was admitted with abdominal distention and pain. Ultrasonography showed a huge cyst, he said.
“A Contrast Enhanced Computerized Tomography (CECT) scan was conducted which revealed that the huge ovarian cyst was occupying the whole abdomen, pelvis, pushing diaphragm, and heart superiority,” he told INS.
During the 45-minute procedure, he said, a football sized cyst was removed from her abdominal uterine cavity. “The cyst we removed weighed 27.4 kilogram. The patient was transfused two units of blood. She is better now,” he said.
Previously also, Dr Azad Malik had removed ovarian cyst weighing 21.5 kgs from an 18-year-old girl year in 2017 in District hospital Anantnag.
Doctors are of the opinion that ignorance, neglect, and lack of awareness in the far flung areas are the main causes that lead to the development of such complications.
“Women tend to feel shy to report these. If a young girl has a pain in her abdomen, she should not feel shy in reporting it to a doctor. Facilities are available at every level. People should come forward,” he said.
