Srinagar: The two week long summer school on climate change and biodiversity concluded at the University of Kashmir (KU) here on Saturday.
The summer school, inaugurated on June 24 by Vice Chancellor KU Prof Talat Ahmad, was organized in collaboration with Bangalore based research institute and think tank Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE).
Dean Research KU Prof Zaffar A Reishi, congratulated the participants and urged the organizers to hold more such programs with the University in future.
“I thank the members of ATREE for choosing our university for this program. We need to make such programs more vibrant and useful. Through our work we can help the policy makers in formulating environmental friendly policies,” said Prof Reishi.
In his remarks, Prof Irshad A Nawchoo, Dean School of Biological Sciences, said that the need of the hour is to change the attitude of people towards the environment.
He observed, “There are clear signs of the destruction of forests and glaciers in our part of the world. Laws alone can’t preserve our environment. At an individual level, we need to contribute a bit and revive whatever we have lost.”
While welcoming the participants to the valedictory function, Dr Manzoor Shah, one of the organizers of the program said, “The aim of this program was to expose the participants to various facets of climate change and its influence on biodiversity especially in the Himalayan range. We hope that all the things learned in these days will be put to practice for a quality research discourse.”
Dr Ankila Hiremath, another organizer of the ATREE summer school, presented vote of thanks on the occassion.
