Srinagar: Three persons were injured when army personnel fired upon a vehicle in which they were travelling in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on last evening, the first day of Eid-ul-fitr, official sources said on Thursday.
Police officials said that the army’s 44 RR asked a car to stop at a check post in Drabgam village of the district at around 9 p.m. last night.
However, the vehicle jumped the naka and army men opened fire, causing injuries to three persons boarding it, the officials said.
The injured have been identified as Waqar Mir son of Mohammad Ahsan, Mohammad Rafiq Dar son of Abdul Gani Dar, both residents of Drubgam, Pulwama and Umer Ashraf Wani son of Mohammad Ashraf of Thairina, Pulwama. One of the injured Waqar has been shifted to SMHS hospital while two others are treated at the local hospital.
Army’s Srinagar-based spokesperson Rajesh Kalia could not be contacted for comments. However some reports quoted him as saying that his office was “ascertaining the facts.” Meanwhile people urged government to ensure such incidents are not repeated. “Sometimes a driver does not see the signal and it does not mean army or any other government force should open fire and kill those boarding the vehicle,” the locals said and urged the government to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in future.
