Shopian: A militant has been killed in an ongoing encounter with government forces in this south Kashmir district on Sunday. The slain is believed to be the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen’s Syed Naveed Mushtaq alias ‘Naveed Babu’, a former policeman. However there was so far no official confirmation regarding the killing.
A police official said that a joint team of army’s 34RR and police’s SOG launched a cordon-and-search operation at Sitapora village of the district following inputs about the presence of militants. “A contact was established with militants and one of them has been killed so far,” the official said. When this report was filed, the gunfight was going on.
