Reports said that the gunmen fired upon Abdul Qayoom Pandith (54) son of Ghulam Mohidin Pandith outside his home at Jablipora area of Bijbhera. Pandith received a bullet wound in his leg and was removed to hospital.

A police officer said that Pandith, a contractor by profession, was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Sources, however, said that Pandith was later referred to Srinagar hospital for advanced treatment.

Soon after the incident, the government forces launched searches in the area to nab the assailants. Assembly segment of Bijbehara has 93289 voters (47067 males and 46222 females), and is going for parliamentary polls along with four other assembly seats on Tuesday.
