Central Jail inmates call off strike following promise by high-level delegation visiting prison soon

Srinagar: Following assurances from Srinagar district administration that they will be given a patient hearing inmates at Central Jail have called off their strike on Wednesday.
According to officials privy to development Superintendent of Police , Central Jail, a Magistrate was deputed to interact with inmates who had declined to meet any one even from their families.
“The team who visited jail was led by Tehsildar Khanyar Abdur Rehman Dar,” sources said.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar Shahid Iqbal Chaudhary said that the innmates have told the visiting team that they have to raise some issues with officials which was assured to them.
“A team of judiciary and executive will visit after 19 April,” Chaudhary said.
He also said that a committee headed by SDM Sandeep Singh has already submitted its report.
On Tuesday relatives of inmates staged a protest demonstration in Press Enclave urging authorities to not turn the high security jail into another ‘Guantanamo’.
They told reporters that they are not being allowed to meet their kith and kin in the prison and said that they fear for their well being.
The protesters had demanded that cases against them must be revoked.
On April 5 government claimed that their was as a jail break attempt by inmates however Jammu and Kashmir High court bar Association in its report had quoted inmates saying it was a false claim.
They had told them that protests broke out in the prison as authorities had desecrated Holy Quran.
