Srinagar roads in shambles, authorities to begin criminal proceedings against erring officers

Srinagar: District Srinagar administration is mulling to launch criminal proceeding against executing agencies, contractors, officers responsible for repair and maintenance of roads in the district for failing to do their work.
According to sources Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, also the District Magistrate of the district has shot a letter to chief Engineer R&B, Public Works Deptt, Kashmir informing about the governments intent.
“The letter has sought details i.e names of persons, officers responsible for repair and maintenance of roads in district Srinagar. Also asked to furnish details of contractors, and executing agency,” they said.
The decision to beging criminal proceedings has been taken as road network in Srinagar in in extremely bad conditions and no repair or restoration work has been carried out in last more than six months. This is inspite of the fact that such repairs are part of defect-liablity and the contract for a period of 3 years in most of the cases.
“No repair or restroation work has been started in th district and public nuisance, as defined in the criminal procedure code, has been created. This unwarranted situation call for immediate remedial measures,” DC Srinagar, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary has written to R&B chief.
The letter also states that ‘this office is contemplating proceeding under CPC, against such ‘executing agencies, contractors, officers who have failed to remove such nuisance despite the legal obligations’.
“Hence, the names of person, officer responsible for such repair and maintenance of roads in Dist Srinagar required indispensably may be provided to this office latest by 1500Hrs on April 12 2019,” the letter reads.
