Baramulla: After intermittent fire for entire night, intense gunfight started between militants and government forces in Warpora area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, officials said on Friday.

They said that at least two militants, believed to be affiliated with Jash-e-Mohammad and Lashker-e-Toiba, are holed up in the area.

The fire fight erupted around 11:30 p.m. last night, almost ten hours after army’s 22 RR, CRPF and SOG launched a joint cordon-and-search-operation.

As the joint team of government forces intensified the searches and fired some warning shots towards the suspected spot, the militants opened fire which was retaliated, triggering off the gunfight, they said.

In wake of the gunfight, the authorities imposed restrictions under section 144 CrpC and have also suspended internet services in Sopore and its adjoining areas.  (file picture used for illustration)
